Nawaz Sharif was born on December 25, 1949, in Lahore, Pakistan, to a Kashmiri family. His father, Muhammad Sharif, was a businessman and industrialist, and his mother, Shamim Akhtar, was a housewife. Nawaz was the eldest of three siblings. He spent his early years in Lahore, where he developed a strong interest in politics and business. He was educated at the Saint Anthony’s High School in Lahore, where he excelled in academics and sports. He later attended the Government College in Lahore and then went on to study law at the Punjab University.
Nawaz’s entry into politics was facilitated by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, who saw him as a potential ally. Nawaz became a member of the Punjab Assembly in 1985 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1985.
Nawaz’s First Term as Prime Minister (1990-1993)
In 1990, Nawaz became the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the first time, leading a coalition government. His first term was marked by economic reforms and infrastructure development. However, his government was dismissed in 1993 by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
Nawaz’s Second Term as Prime Minister (1997-1999)
Nawaz returned to power in 1997, winning a landslide victory in the general elections. His second term was marked by significant economic growth and infrastructure development. However, his government was overthrown in 1999 by General Pervez Musharraf.
Nawaz’s Exile and Return (1999-2007)
Nawaz was exiled to Saudi Arabia, where he spent several years in self-imposed exile. He returned to Pakistan in 2007 and became a vocal critic of General Musharraf’s regime.
Nawaz’s Third Term as Prime Minister (2013-2017)
In 2013, Nawaz became the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the third time, leading a coalition government. His third term was marked by significant economic growth and infrastructure development. However, his government was dismissed in 2017 by the Supreme Court, which disqualified him from holding public office due to corruption charges.
